Cameroon is a bilingual country that suffers from several political, social and economic crisis. One of the major problems faced by Cameroon is unemployment. So many graduates after school end up staying at home like it was the next step to take. This is because; jobs are hard to come by, relatives are employed, some people are not competent enough and others don't want the stress. Well keep reading to find out moreSome reasons why Cameroonians are unemployed
1. "God-father"
A "god-father" in Cameroon is anyone who can get you a job regardless of whether you are qualified for it or not.
I once got a freelance job in a government school Library and one of the employees in the course of our conversation clearly told me that if you are not a relative to an employee who already works in that institution, you will not be hired for a job. You could be considered if you know someone though.
According to him, someone must be accountable for your actions whether good or bad in your absence.
This already disqualifies graduates who do not have acquaintances or relatives in such institutions ("god-fathers")
2. Cheap Labour / Reluctance to pay
Employers who are ready to hire competent employees often pay them lesser than the work they have to do and sometimes not at all.
Most private companies put you on probation, within 3-6 months on claims that they want you to proof your worth to them before you can be hired as a full time employee. While some employers won't give you anything, others give you transport and feeding allowance, usually between XAF20.000 to XAF85.000.
Promises are made for a raise but one could end up working for years with no raise and complains, no insurance and even sack letters at the end.
3. Incompetence
It is true that "god-fathers" and employers make life difficult for us but sometimes, it's our fault that we suffer.
We wonder why we are not called for job interviews, hired or why we were fired. It's because our CV and motivational letter are poorly done. And due to the frustration from rejection, we turn to send applications everywhere as if to catch a fish without being competent, failing to train or even liking the job in question.
Despite all these hindrances, it is still possible to get a job in Cameroon, a job you qualify for, without the help of a "god-father" and not receiving fake promises from employees. Here is how.
How to get a job in Cameroon
1. Take your school seriously
You may take it lightly but school is very important. In fact, it is an opportunity for you to lay a strong foundation for your career, especially in Cameroon. Through school, you will gain recommendations, as well as the knowledge and skills for your career. That's why you must focus, study and work hard. AVOID CHEATING (This is very common and it doesn't help you)
Usually, there are internships between semesters or at the end of the academic year. Take advantage of this too and while an intern, put your best foot forward. Work hard and learn all you can. Make sure that when you leave, they should feel your absence and they will definitely call you to work for them after studies.
Bonus tip: don't be afraid to make mistakes or ask questions when you don't know or understand something. Remember you are at your learning stage and it's essential for your growth.
2. Find problems and solve them
So many companies need competent workers and they will be willing to go beyond their usual habits to pay you what you are worth if you prove it to them. Hence, make a list of companies you would like to work with and study them. Every problem the company has, identify and find solutions to them, then present it to them. If you tell a company a problem they are facing and your solution is feasible, they will give you a call.
Hence you can freelance or be a consultant at what you are doing which will definitely grant you income.
3. Applying for Jobs
It is also possible to apply for jobs but to tell you the truth, most companies who announce job openings will start with a probation. If you don't mind that, make sure your cv and motivation letter is top notch. Ask a lecturer, or someone experienced to revise it and give you their opinion about it. Besides, corrections and suggestions don't harm anybody.
It will also interest you to research about the company. Know their history, have their contacts and even look online for people who work there (LinkedIn is your friend for this)
Even though Cameroon is embracing new technology, some employers don't have time to either read their emails or even check it. Even when you have a letter in an envelope, it might just remain on the secretary's desk. Here is how your research will help you.
Go to the company and talk directly to them. Don't be afraid of asking for the person in charge. Call their name if you found it on LinkedIn
You can can say
"I'm looking for Mr. *** I have an offer for him. It's important that we talk directly"
make an appointment if you have to and propose your service to them personally. (Be bold and precise)
Not only does employers in Cameroon admire boldness, they may buy your idea immediately if they see need for it.
Getting employed in Cameroon is difficult but not impossible so you must work extra hard to stand out. I suggest you do further research on how to get a job in Cameroon so you are well equipped.
Good luck!
